womanofthehills mention of Mountainair rang a bell. That's where the helpers were taken off to run back down to Belen.
Those were the days when a slick talking kid could persuade an engineer to let him ride the helper engine up and back, which was an experience hard to describe. Working up the grade, with those steam engines down on their knees and barking their guts out was awesome.
Sometimes the helpers would be cut into a down-bound train so that they could help slow a train with their compression, but sometimes they came back down light. Coming back down the grade light; no train, just five to eight Berks coupled and running compression was terrifying.
