(1,629 posts)I'm not a fan of US federalism and don't buy into that the original 13 states were ever sovereign nations. They were creations of Britain. They fought the Revolution as a single nation, not 13 sovereign states. Nor do I believe that states after those original 13 were ever sovereign... through maybe Texas's curious history makes it the exception. But then that's just my take. But those 13 certainly believed and acted as sovereigns... and it's right there in the Articles
II. Each state retains its sovereignty, freedom, and independence, and every power, jurisdiction, and right, which is not by this Confederation expressly delegated to the United States, in Congress assembled.
It would seem logical that even sovereigns can surrender that sovereignty. The Constitution made no such declaration of state sovereignty. It's enough to make one's head spin.
