(7,604 posts)I suspect that you're overestimating the weight of opinion-making on the periphery of political discussion. Further, there is a positive aspect to "extreme" points of view. If there is indeed a "center", it benefits from addressing the counterpoints exposed by dissenting groups, left or right. For example, for decades the prevailing political view was that single payer health insurance was viewed as radical and malevolently socialist. Yet the discussion remained in the periphery until the need for a change in perspective gained ground. Now the notion of single payer is gaining legitimacy as one of the few common sense solutions for the nation's health care. The "far left" (whoever they are) doesn't need introspection. Once a "far left" political idea hits the mainstream, that's when it gains power. At that point, it's time for the "center" to be introspective.
