Dicking around with war threats against nuclear-capable countries is the height of irresponsibility in statecraft. I still don't understand why the Pentagon left President Trump's empty threat hanging out there for days before correcting it, and then only when others had determined the true location of the carrier strike group. What "strategic" purpose is served by provoking a false confrontation with other nuclear powers?
