Not being able to plan their families (or in the poorest countries being afraid to, because of uncertainty as to whether their children will survive) keeps people poor, and passes on poverty to the next generation. Because it tends to be the more articulate, middle-class people who are in a position to campaign about reproductive rights, it is sometimes misleadingly seen as just a social issue. Nothing could be further from the truth.
