(60,149 posts)That's just the way his clock ticks--probably why he got shut out of the Obama administration. When Rahm, who hated Howard's guts, got to be WH Chief of Staff, Howard's chances of getting the coveted HHS Cabinet post flew out the window, even if it was his tireless efforts that gave Obama a friendly Congress when he took office. I was with him in February, 2009, during the time after Tom Daschle had taken his name for that post out of the running, and Obama hadn't yet decided on a replacement. I asked him what he would do if Rahm froze him out altogether. Howard said he'd lend his name to some law firm for name recognition (for them) and some steady income (for him) and spend the rest of his time "raising hell for causes he believed in." He then went on to do exactly that. I remember contributing to a march he took part in from Bangkok to the Burmese border to raise awareness about human trafficking. I do NOT recall EVER seeing a report about that or a comment in the American media (I think the British picked up on it at the time). Not spectacular enough for big headlines, I guess, but Howard thought it was worth his while, so he did it.
