(17,280 posts)didn't mean "to say we should concentrate on income inequality to the exclusion of all else" at all. That's clearly not what he said. If criticizing the Democratic Party's past performance (calling the Party "out of touch with the working class" is nothing more than a colloquialism meaning the same thing) is maligning the Party then so be it I guess. I don't see it as maligning at all. To me, it's no different than frankly calling out one's child for poor behavior -- it gets their attention and puts them on notice that they are being held accountable. Progressives in the Party have been saying this for 30 years. There's nothing new in any of this other than a heightened awareness of the economic issue -- i.e., populism. Bernie just happens to be one of the most popular people say,ing these things, ergo the attention he gets.
