Your reaction struck me as knee-jerk. There is nothing in that phrasing that implies a desire for the elimination of guns. There just isn't. It's a common way of phrasing things. Anyone who sees it otherwise is looking for an argument.

"The gun fired" is a common phrase like "the car started" or "the plane took off".
