1. Berkeley's never had to deal with this before -- what one reporter called a "fight club" mentality.

The Vietnam protests were not like this -- they were motivated by idealism not hate. And most of the violence, when it happened, came from the police, not the students.

And Berkeley is an open campus with dozens of unguarded entrances and exits, so it's a very difficult place to secure.
