From 1964 on, in any case, I generally assumed that the Republicans were wrong, although not necessarily evil and back then not even all sleazy and devious. Of course, the Democrats had been going through some rough spells too--and it was good for the party that the Southern Democrats turned Republican if they didn't see the light.
I think the election of the demented B-movie actor in 1980 was definitely a turning point in the history of civility in politics. Reagan was a former union president (Screen Actors' Guild) who became the biggest union-buster during the PATCO strike in 1981: See "The Strike That Busted Unions" By JOSEPH A. That portended the true rise of the evil Republicans since: the elite and would-be elite who despise anyone who stands for civil rights and social justice and ordinary human decency.
