Something was lost after Nixon, who, while much despised by liberals, including myself, had more personal than political issues. Actually (EPA,etc.) did some good. Today's Republicans truly seem to lack the compromise gene our founders expected, which existed for many years. LBJ, a much experienced politician, was the last hard-ass Democrat, but was still destroyed by holding the line and basically killed himself. Carter, Clinton, Obama--very different Presidents, but all sabotaged in different ways by the no longer "loyal opposition." Working against any Democratic president, rather than governing seems to define today's Republican party.
