15. Bilbo was a nasty POS, but he did get a lot of legislation passed

that was rather progressive for the time. He used his pathological racism to get the support of poor white farmers who were fighting against the wealthy Delta planters that dominated the state for some time. Unfortunately, populism in Mississippi exploited racial divisions to stir up the common people so that much-needed reforms could be passed. Plenty of other politicians in Miss. were just as racist as Bilbo, but Bilbo's rhetorical denunciation of black people was unsurpassed. Nobody much remembers anything about Bilbo's legislative accomplishments, but he is still widely loathed for stirring up hate. There is a statue of Bilbo in the state capitol in Jackson. The legislature's black caucus uses it as a coat rack.
