My mom was on the phone with her small town sheriff's office almost every day, having them track him down. Fortunately, even though he didn't know where he was when they found him, he usually went on the same route. Finally she got up the nerve to take away his car keys and that was an emotional night mare for him, but he eventually adjusted. As long as she was functional, he got by. Once she started falling apart they both had to go to assisted living. That actually helped him a lot, even after she passed. Within a year he couldn't remember her, the absolute love of his life for 50+ years. It's a horrible thing to experience.
