Obama has more than the power to prosecute criminals. Reactive prosecutions of terrorists is no longer sufficient according to the consensus of the populace. We have an Executive with Commander-In-Chief powers specifically so that the government can react quickly and even ruthlessly if necessary to protect... well, something. Yea, maybe it is the Constitution, maybe it is just the lives of the citizens, maybe just whatever administration is currently taking its turn protecting the property rights of the wealthy, the only reason government exists at all. But to say the President shouldn't be allowed to take a citizen off the street and lock them up if they have reasonable evidence they could be ready to trigger a bomb or some even more horrific attack is to say you don't think the President should do so.
You don't have to worry about the whole nation suddenly abandoning "government is bad". This is America. But when its the leftists that are doing it, things get a little confusing, I hope you understand. I never suggested either looking the other way or trusting politicians. In fact, just the opposite. I'm pointing out that you don't get to assume that if the right laws are written (or not passed, in this case) then you can safely look away and trust the President. You have to give them enough power to abuse it, or else you aren't giving them enough power to do what you are putting them in office to do. And then watch them, to see if they actually abuse that power. That's how "trust" in government works. It's called elections.
As for your having the temerity to find a fundamental and critical feature of government "merely laughable", well, what can I say? We don't "achieve either" when we balance two things, no. We balance them.
I dare to say perhaps you're still coming to grips with the twenty first century. It isn't enough to oppose potential tyranny. You end up opposing government itself. You have to limit your opposition to kinetic tyranny.
