Anyone who really wants to get through and crash a plane is going to do so.
It's all bullshit, and we're putting up with it. It's like the old say about locks - they're for honest people.
Ben Franklin had it right - those who would surrender their freedom for security, deserve neither.

Personally I have always thought there should be random checks beyond the checkpoints.

Very few in the U.S. More in Europe. And more checkpoints in Europe and Japan also.
