History will record that Trump's downfall began with his firing of James Comey [View all]

Comey knew he was walking on thin ice after Trump asked for his loyalty and Comey refused. He then began to document all his interactions with Donald Trump.

Trump made the mistake of showing his hand too quickly. Comey started preparing for the inevitable. He knew that if continued with his investigation he would be fired. But he had no plans to go quietly.

If he had not fired Comey, the chances are that Republicans would have stood behind him almost unanimously. He may have been able to weather the storm?

But his impetuous undignified firing of James Comey turned the investigation into a whole new ballgame. He and his Party are presently in full-scale retreat.
