(3,335 posts)Congress in only in session normally 3 days a week because Monday and Friday are official travel days. In spite of this, most congress men and women are done leave early on Thursday, which is why so little gets done there. I know because I lived there and worked there and I traveled often and usually on Thursdays and I would see them at the airport, sometimes very early Thursday afternoon.
When they had to live there, they had more camaraderie with their fellow members across the aisle. The way it is set up now, seems like they fly in for a hot second and fly out. The first I heard of someone sleeping in their office was Paul Ryan, years ago on a 60 minute segment. The 60 minute guy seemed to imply then that this was an anomaly. Now it's seems it's more common than not. They all receive per diem and a subsistence allowance for their travel days which they wouldn't be entitled to if they had a permanent residence there. Just one more way to try and milk the system, I guess. Government employees face the same challenges as they do with high rent, traffic and all, but somehow we have to manage. So cry me a river Jason.
