36. I don't think that the age matters. The crime is transferring obscene materials to a minor.

He got in trouble with the law because he transferred material to someone he believed was under the age of consent presumably because he believed she was 15.

It is like a prostitution sting (not that I agree with criminalizing prostitution but it is illegal). When the police undercover stands there and a John comes up and solicits sex for money, he is breaking the law even though the cop is not really a prostitute. The John thought she was and solicited the sex for money thereby breaking the law willfully.

Like those shows that Chis Hansen used to do where those guys would come over to that house after chatting with a supposedly under aged person, then Chris would come in and be, "What are you doing here...?" The crime is the intent to engage in the illicit activity despite knowing it is illegal.
