They, like most large cities, also happen to be liberal bastions.

It wasn't some fluke that OBL targeted the World Trade Center and the Pentagon - one was was the a very visible symbol of American financial might and the other the beating heart of the most powerful military in the world. He knew that destroying them would send an unforgettable message.

Terrorists seem to target locations that will give them the greatest media coverage or inflict the biggest bruise - blowing up a Jason Aldean concert at Memorial Hall in Joplin, Missouri wouldn't have quite the media oomph that attacking a Bon Jovi concert at The Garden would.
