They have this idea that life in the US is better than in any other country in the world, and if we don't keep our guard up every second, we're going to be dragged down into horrors like peace, education, universal health care, paid parental leave etc. etc.

Ignorance is bliss; as someone said above, they've never been anywhere, and so the idea that we might actually benefit from working with other countries is unimaginable.
