While globalization sounds good. We all inhabit the same planet and citizens of the world has a nice ring to it. Unfortunately, many of the poorer countries cannot, or will not, pay a decent wage and maintain a standard of living that is good for all its citizens. Of course, we help foster this kind of inequality when our corporations take advantage of a workforce that does not pay them enough to live on.

If we really want to be citizens of the world, we should stop taking advantage of the slave labor that produces cheap goods that we in the west have become accustomed to. As global citizens, we should stop using dollar stores and other discount shops that we know are exploiting their workers. How can we buy anything for a dollar without knowing that it came from a underpaid person living in poverty.

If we make the world a better place for the citizens who now live in poverty, they will not see the need to risk their lives trying to get to a better place. The sad fact is that the west cannot absorb the millions of people looking for a better life and we should do what it takes to make them want to stay home and live a decent life.
