He's sold himself to a specific group of sad-sacks. They're the "strongly approve" groups polled about trump's performance. I think a lot of them have Daddy Issues that completely overwhelm their better judgement. He also personally knows that appealing to the NRA group's defensiveness will rile them up (for example) & turn them to anger. If he eggs them on enough, rage.

Rallies do that. All Trump has to do is direct their anger at everyone else: those who try to take down their beloved celebrity. Each seems to think that trump will PERSONALLY save them.
