When a whole society gets together to do so, it sometimes succeeds, but as an individual, it's almost always a lost cause. If an animal is eating your vegetables, the solution is to plant something they don't want to eat. If insects are devouring your flowers, the solution is to plant something that resists the insects. I've learned this the hard way, when I tried to grow roses in New Jersey a few years ago and found myself spraying them with toxic fungicides. Now, the roses are gone, and my garden is full of native plants that need almost no maintenance. What's more, the birds, the butterflies, the bees, and all the other animals seem to really enjoy the native plants.
