I live in such a small town, and folks were much quieter during the Obama years. Certainly we heard comments about "Obummer" but they were more cautious about speaking publicly. Now they are emboldened by trump and other republicans to step out of the shadows and shove it in our faces. I think that some of the very ugly confrontations we have seen between trumpers and people of color or "others" are the result of years of pent up anger coming to the surface. The scary part to me is that it is being normalized. When trump and others are excused for their boorish and bigoted statements and actions, their supporters feel justification to follow suit.
