However, it is still fairly acceptable among a disturbingly large segment of the population. If you think about the movies of the 40's and 50's, you see men slapping, cuffing, and throwing women around because they were being "petulant". That was only 60 or so years ago.

There has been a taboo against incest. There is a taboo against child molestation and hitting women is not celebrated but I think that attitude against it is driven by politics and legality more than some strong ethical inclination against it.
