He's done either way.

Edited to add: He may as well go ahead and fire Mueller.....he knows he is caught, and that Mueller will bring him down. The firing of Mueller won't work, and deep down he knows the chances are slim, but if he doesn't throw every hail Mary he's got (and there will be more), he may as well just march himself down to a federal prison, because again.....he's caught and he knows it.
