That is his ace in the hole. He will not hesitate to use it if he begins to feel threatened by the investigation.

The challenge for the Democrats and the investigators is to not let him feel "threatened" by the investigation. Do not tell him that he is the subject of the investigation. Otherwise, he will shut it down immediately. He doesn't really care if it catches everyone around him, so long as he is not in the net.

Just as he was pressured by McConnell and Ryan to get rid of General Flynn, they will also pressure him to not fire Mueller until the midterm elections (2018) are over with. That could hurt their chances to maintain the House very dramatically. It would almost guarantee their loss of the House of Representatives and give the Democrats the power to bring impeachment charges against Donald Trump. This the game of survival they are now playing.
