9. A Couple of Thoughts

First: The Islanders attribute their losses to "erosion". Whatever, it's a combination of rising sea levels responding to warming temperatures (from rising CO2 levels) causing thermal expansion, additional glacial meltwater and sinking land in the area due to the loss of the large land glaciers that covered most of North America during the last ice age (post glacial rebound in reverse for this area). There also may be some drop due to aquifer withdrawal from wells if there is any freshwater under the island.

Second: You expect the Federal Government to shell out millions of dollars so 400+ people can live on an island that's sinking?!? Tell you what, I'll go for a quick buy out rather than building castles in the sand. Don't like it? Then talk to the people of Centralia, PA. They had the same standing offer but for a slightly different reason. Stay if you like but accept the consequences of your actions and stop complaining.

Maybe a little over the top but I don't have much sympathy for people looking for bailouts for making bad decisions.
