I would like to see the results of a study about the extent to which race and education correlate to attitudes toward Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin.
If we changed the color of their skins in our minds so that Trayvon Martin was a white victim and Zimmerman an African-American killer, then I suspect that many people who now side with the white Zimmerman would switch and side with the white Trayvon Martin.
I also think that if you switched their racial identifications, then Zimmerman with an African-American would already have been convicted and sentenced or entered into a plea bargain.
I'm not saying what view I have about whether Zimmerman should be able to claim self-defense. I am not familiar enough with the facts to know that, and I don't think that all the facts, especially those concerning the likely credibility of the various witnesses, is public knowledge yet. You can't know whether a person's story is credible until you hear it from that person's own mouth and that person is cross-examined.
But I think race has a great bearing on how you view this case. I also think that whether you have enough education to see past race has a bearing on how you view it.
