9. Ancient traditions, not just religion

These are attitudes that go back to the ancient Romans and Greeks who did not allow women a place in the public sphere and considered them the property of men. In the very early church women did have some leadership roles, but that disappeared as the church got bigger and Roman customs became more influential.
