There's a significant group in America that just wants to be left alone to live in their own little worlds. They like living under an authoritarian "leadership" that gives them the simplicity Manichean choices in life, and have no interest in governance or diplomacy - and certainly not in anything that happens outside their sphere. They will attack anything that threatens their comfort.
They're not going to debate, and they're not going to listen, until reality slaps them upside the face in no uncertain terms. They live in an Establishment.
Democrats operate in Coalitions. Blue Dogs, Yellow Dogs, and True Believers - and just plain folks with a wide range of interests who generally like to look for solutions.
Locally, they may have established groups with their own socio-political hierarchy (including mini-Bosses that dictate the party focus in some areas), but on the whole, when they come together, Democrats represent a very wide, very colorful and sometimes contradictory coalition of progressive interests, where negotiation and governance are critical to maintain forward momentum - for everyone, not just a few.
Not every issue has just two sides, and no solution can be either "perfect" or "totally wrong".
And that's why DU sometimes seem to be "mean" to single issue/radical posters who come in to "debate". Because most of the time, such attempts to "debate" are thinly veiled attempts to proselytize - the "debater" isn't going to listen to anyone who might possibly contradict his or her worldview, or point out flaws in the argument. Instead, they attack everyone who doesn't agree with them.
Most times, just pointing out the weaknesses or attempts to explain (not excuse) a situation or opinion ends up being a mud fight when one side just doesn't want to admit that someone else has just as valid - or more valid - evidence for a different solution or even just viewpoint.
You can't have a discussion with someone who does not want to acknowledge or have a modicum of respect where you come from.
Oh, and venting or pointing out an injustice or problem is not "discussing". Lots of people make that mistake...
