"Game Changing Strategy for Pain Relief Found"
Date: May 31, 2017
Source: Monash University (Australia)
Summary:
"Researchers have developed a new drug delivery strategy able to block pain within the nerve cells, in what could be a major development of an immediate and long lasting treatment for pain."
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/05/170531143659.htm

I think this research is so new that they haven't gotten to clinical tests on humans yet, but clinical trials on humans with severe, chronic pain may soon be conducted.
(You may want to check with your doctor about this)

Another online source for the latest research on severe and/or chronic pain is:
The American Academy of Pain Medicine

I also found this:
(unable to post a link)
Google:
"Is Cannabis Better for Chronic Pain than Opioids?"

"Both THC and CBD in cannabis are known to elicit analgesic effects, especially when used together due to their congruent chemical synergies."
