For this special election, Georgia used the "jungle primary" system in which all candidates, regardless of party affiliation, run in one primary. If anyone gets more than 50% of the vote, that person is elected. Otherwise, the top two go into a runoff.

In the first round there were five Democrats on the ballot. Ossoff far outpointed all of them. In fact, despite the residence issue, he came in well ahead of all the Republicans, and at 48.12% he was only a few thousand votes short of winning the seat outright. Results here.
