Reading the Constitution and the papers of Jefferson and Madison would be an excellent summer assignment. The site teachingamericanhistory.org has a list of 50 core documents that every student should study. I have downloaded the documents, and I'm re-reading many of them myself. They include the Federalist papers, court cases, and other key documents that helped inform the development of our democratic government.
