(40,672 posts)36. They're afraid they could be labeled "mentally ill" and have their guns taken away.
It's pretty obvious.
And the thing is, myself, a person who isn't functional without powerful psych meds, believes their guns *should* be taken away.
Fortunately I'm not conflicted about this because I've never been interested in guns. I'm not going to let any imaginary bad guys live in my head on the off-chance I might run into a real bad guy someday that I'd care to shoot. For every gun hero there are dozens of fools who have shot family, friends, coworkers, complete strangers, and themselves. There are small children who have found guns and shot themselves or family.
There are too many fools with guns in this nation and many of us know their victims.

A childhood friend and neighbor was shot and killed by his father in law. Over religion.

I can't imagine there are too many people who don't know someone who committed suicide with a gun.

Sadly, a childhood friend of mine got heavily into drugs when he was in his late teens.

Yes, shot twice, and missed twice too. He survives to this day. Several others also, some dead.

Mostly, the 'mentally ill' as they would be adjudicated are not shooting people.

Yes. A cousin was asleep in his house. The gunsmith down the road tested a handgun.
