They've gone the other direction. Close relationships with powerful oligarchs, the state sponsored racism and bigotry, the pushing of extreme conservative religion as part of focusing public anger on other groups... They even have the genocidal campaign against lgbtq people.

It's more in line with Nazi Germany than any Communist state. It's a big reason Hitler admirer Trump is so enamored with Putin.
