Their bottom line to me is "Make America White, Male and Heterosexual Again." That's what REALLY matters. (Notice none of them cared that Melania, a white woman, had been an undocumented worker... or that she has a heavy accent... or speaks another language with her child.) My dad (before he died) and other older white men who benefited from the best-economy-ever when they were young-- men who were able to rise from their poor, working class origins to professional, middle class lives--still seethe with resentment at the cultural changes that have made their ilk not QUITE as dominant.

My dad, living in CA, was so mad he couldn't see straight when HRC was elected senator from NY. Why the hell would he care?! I think the whole "vast, right-wing conspiracy" was the result of an uppity woman from Illinois arriving in Arkansas and declining to properly embody the stereotype of "governor's wife"... with the utter contempt for her then extended to the "cuck" who would "allow" such a breach of all that is decent. His presidential campaign and election elicited the same anxiety and contempt on a more massive scale. It's not about economics, but about wanting to maintain the previous balance of power-- the "good old days." They own that.

Yes, they are brainwashed. But that's just reinforcing what is already most important to them. Otherwise, most of them are obviously voting against their own self-interest. But if their main "interest" is "Make America White, Male and Heterosexual Again," they are on the right track.
