In reply to the discussion: I know some very good, kind and gentle Trump supporters. [View all]DonCoquixote
(13,956 posts)I have heard ten thousand versions of "Not all Trump voters were bigots." I have heard Jon Stewart say it, I have heard many here on DI say it. Some more malicious variations of this are "People were suffering so bad in the Midwest and Hillary was too busy trying to make those rich hipsters in the city happy." I have heard people say it who had no grudges against gays/women/immigrants and I have heard some use it to hide the fact that they felt said groups got too much attention, as opposed to the "white working class" , aka the people who thought the Democratic party should be about them first, if not them only. I even heard Bernie say a variant of this, and while yes, he tried to rein it in, by the time his supporters yelled at blacks calling them "you people!" the damage to trust was done.
Why did I go through this, especially as I know you were not trying to add malice, and not trying to defend this, because right now, under the guise of "unity" there is an attempt to defend those offended feelings of those people who have been undermining any attempt to form a coherent, clear, left based message, and that they have been doing that since they became the "Reagan Democrats." Now, more than ever, these people do NOT need comfort, because however "not a bigot" they say they are, they were very much willing to let one come into power. One can have more sympathy for some yahoo that was raised on the stars and bars voting that way, as thanks to corruption of the schools and yes, churches, they did not know any better. However, the defected democrats, be they the "union guy" that just wants JOBS, or the more left wing than though who just wanted to say "fuck the clintons!", should have known better. They broke the nation the way a child broke a toy, and they have the nerve to posotion themselves as wiser and more virtuous.
So, sorry to say, I do not care how nice these voters are, because as much as Americans cherish the idea of the individual, we are also a group, with rights AND RESPONSIBILITIES. If they voted Trump, they need to realize that no, we are not going to beg, we are not going to change ourselves, to compromise to the point where we forsake the truth that we know and have known. When you hear these folk write "you know this is a right based county, you are going to lose" then we can remind them that wen the McArthys, Nixons, and yes Bushes fell, they fell so hard that they are not even acknowledged, except in the alt right that tries to spin apologetic for them that not even most GOP buy. REALITY IS ON OUR SIDE, and frankly, it is high time we acted like it.
