13. Wingnuts are almost always the product of authoritarian households

and it takes a meaningful paradigm-shifting life event, or a determined (and rebellious) critical-thought mindset (the blacksheep archetype) or a long-term, very well-rounded Socratic education (Q&A type in humanities) to deprogram from that type of authoritarian brainwashing.

Deprogramming takes years and it's a journey.

The real hope for our democracy lies in getting non-voters engaged, getting minorities reinstated to the voter rolls and in legally challenging the gerry-mandering district by district or state by state.
