207. It's a kind of tribalism, I think.

I know a family of Trump voters, old friends of my family, who are among the nicest, kindest people I've ever met - in my own personal experience dealing with them. (I have never specifically discussed politics with them, except once when the old grandpa expressed surprise when I said I considered myself to be liberal. He didn't give me a hard time, though.) But the important thing is that we're members of their "tribe" of middle-class white people. It seems like many Trump voters (and even before Trump, many conservatives in general) are often generous and kind to people within their own circles, but are disinclined to extend their generosity outside their communities - their town or church or their racial or religious or ethnic identity.
