(58,785 posts)watching what conservative reaction heralded by reaganism did to our nation, the only people suited to run western-style liberal democracies are liberals and at most moderate conservatives.
Strong-to-extreme conservatives and far-left radicals and extremists can't do it because in their cores they don't believe in government of, by and for the people, but rather in government by them. The big difference is that the far left's conceit that imposing their way on others, whatever that might take, is necessary for, and will be for, the good of all.
But back to most of us, liberals who copy the right by becoming the worst political versions of themselves also become dangers to democracy. This isn't some vague imagining. We're seeing it happen now. Political scientists are watching hostility and extremism growing on the left, years after it happened to the right, yes, but growing. Black-and-white hostility-based partisanship that can be harnessed by evil leaders as surely as it's happened to the right. And extremism destroys nations. It can't even sustain democracy, much less advance the wellbeing of over 300 million people.
