In reply to the discussion: Schumer: 'You dont blame other people' for losing an election [View all]Nevernose
(13,081 posts)Many people are responsible for losses or wins in politics, each to varying degrees. The individual candidate almost always bears 100% of the responsibility. The national party some, the hired strategists probably more than a somewhat-nebulous national "party." Obviously in this metaphor, 100% isn't the maximum. Either that or I graduated from Dan Quayle University.
Anyway: placing blame on others is, at absolute best, totally useless. We can only change our own actions. The answer to "What would you do differently next time?" cannot ever be "I've got no idea, but let me tell you what my winning opponent should do next time!"
This is the same reason I get mad at the endless Bernie-bashing and nearly-as-bad HRC bashing. It doesn't fucking matter. Bernie would have won the general election! I actually believe this, but so fucking what? He lost the primary. He wasn't the general candidate. "Rewrite history" is not a valid option for doing things differently next time. Bernie is a phony, self-aggrandizing, opportunistic asshole who could never have won! Is irrelevant for the same reason as above: it just doesn't matter. True or not, it just brings up hurt feelings and serves to divide.
If we really, really want to get into the Hillary/Bernie woods, then we should be looking at what they did right and try and repeat it. That would not only help us win elections, it would make us better people.
