(4,187 posts)You are making the assumption that a Black person cannot be racist. Such assumptions reveal a lack of understanding of how discrimination works. I see this all the time on DU: "Oh, that attitude is not sexist, because here is a woman who holds that attitude"; or, "Oh, that's not racist because I know a black guy who thinks that." You might as well say, "That person is not racist because he has Black friends!" In fact, Black people can be racist against Black people; women can be sexist against women. Living in a racist and sexist society ensures that all of us, regardless of our skin color and gender, have racist and sexist tendencies. You can try to overcome those tendencies, but they will never completely disappear. The only remedy is thoughtfulness and vigilance.
Being a member of a minority makes it more likely that one will be sensitive to discrimination against one's group. In other words, a woman is more likely to recognize sexism than a man; a black person is more likely to recognize racism than a white person. But that doesn't mean all sexists are men or that all racists are white. It just means we should listen to others, since they may notice things that may not be obvious to us.
In any case, the existence of one black Trump supporter does not change the fact that Trump supporters are overwhelmingly white and overwhelmingly racist. If Trump supporters were not overwhelmingly racist, they would not have been attracted by Trump's dog whistles. There may be a small number of Trump supporters out there who are not racist but are sexist and therefore had to vote for Trump to teach Hillary a lesson. That doesn't change the fact that they are bigots. No one who is not a bigot would have voted for Trump given his racist, sexist, and otherwise hateful rhetoric. And there is nothing "good, kind, and gentle" about bigots.
