The world could be essentially unchanged on a broad scale, but if much the media obediently repeats the propaganda that comes from this country's leadership like they've done so many times in the past, too many Americans will become frightened and support actions/politicians for their supposed protection. Even if the media discounts the truthfulness of the propaganda sometimes, the fact that they repeat the fear-mongering on a regular basis affects people.
