They sent out a little newsletter to kids who signed up it with facts about the White House and apocryphal doings of Socks around the place. In addition, "Socks" sent out holiday cards, which the Republicans (newly in control of the House) investigated to be sure that no public money was being expended on this obviously partisan propaganda. They had hearings, took testimony, and issued a report that grudgingly conceded that taxpayer money hadn't been wasted on this entertainment/educational program.
