(34,189 posts)It was started as Infobases, Inc. by Paul B. Allen and Dan Taggart. They got their start by putting LDS genealogical information on floppy diskss and selling them out of the back seat of their car. LAter they upgraded the digital format to CDs and finally went online in 1994.

LDS has their own database, FamilySearch.org which has some overlap with Ancestry.com but which offers some information not on Ancestry. FamilySearch.org is free while Ancestry is pretty expensive.
