People meant by "single payer". A friend of mine who lives in Frankfurt with his wife and 2 kids, worked as an IT contractor until his salary was over some cutoff for healthcare, meaning he would have to pay an extra 11,000 Euro a year as a self employed person. He was fortunate that he was able to get the same job from his then client, as a full time employee.
The point is that there is no perfect system, and anywhere there is then it costs.
Glad to hear your wife is on the mend.
