(49,445 posts)Regardless of legality, you're the impediment. You're forcing people to break up their cruising and adapt to you. This happens millions, tens of millions, hundreds of millions of times a day, and a certain percentage of these events results in a collision.
Obviously, some people are assholes; if you're passing slower traffic and they're being jerks behind you, then it's not you. And I take special pleasure in foiling people that try to come up from my right rear and cram themselves into the safety cushion I have between my car and the vehicle I'm following.
But if you're passing with a 1 MPH speed advantage, then, really, you're not helping. "Look, technically speaking, I'm passing!" still makes you the impediment, the discontinuity in the smooth flow of traffic.
