(1,290 posts)Young people today have a higher opinion of socialism than capitalism. The most popular politician in the country is a socialist, and he's got a 60% favorable rating. Membership in the DSA has quadrupled since 2015. More Democrats/Independents are willing to call themselves socialists than they would have been in the past. If you think any of that would have happened 15 years ago, I have a bridge to sell you.
Those of us born after the Cold War don't have the Red Scare mentality anymore. We know American-style capitalism and Soviet-style communism failed the world in the 20th century, but we also have a more nuanced view of how to move forward. Capitalism will kill the world if we don't stop it, and fortunately it contains the seeds of its own destruction.
