even if Russia GDP is much smaller than China, Japan, US & EU, their vast natural resources from oil, nat gas, coal, wood, iron, copper, gold, silver, etc the growing world economy is hungry for. They can sell it on black market.

After the Crimea invasion, Europe tried sanctions, and got nowhere.

A resource poor country like Japan or UK would be much more susceptible to trade sanctions.
